The Six Steps to Mindful Hand Care

Enjoying mindful moments during our daily hand care routines can do wonders for our health and happiness and, with the current state of the world, self-care and personal hygiene has become quite topical. We want to keep our ourselves and our loved ones healthy, so it’s the perfect time to brush up on our hand washing techniques – but why not take these 20 seconds to also focus on mindfulness and gratitude.

 

Mindfulness, the ability to be fully present in the moment, can decrease stress and increase levels of focus and happiness. We all have trouble finding those moments in the day to stop and think of what we are grateful for, what makes our hearts smile. The simple act of hand care affords you this small practice of kindness to yourself, to bring you back home to the gentle sound of your inner voice.

 

The Six Steps to Mindful Hand Care

 

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water, turn the tap off (we all like to save water, don’t we?) and apply your favourite soap. Choose something with a soothing scent like that of The Base Collective's White Tea Magnesium Hand & Body Wash
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with soap. While you’re lathering the backs of your hands and between your fingers, focus on your senses. What can you smell? Let your mind wander to a calm field with lush trees swaying in the wind or feel your toes in warm sand by a soft sea on a warm summer evening.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. 20 seconds seems so long when you watch that long, thin hand ticking around a clock – but why not use these moments to think of three things you are grateful for. Is it a kind family member, a fur baby that loves you so unconditionally, or simply that your coffee was made just right this morning?
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean water. Feel the droplets roll off your hands and take this moment to thank yourself for being present, for showing yourself love and kindness in the simplest of ways.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Cleanse away your worries, be present.
